Penguin Awareness Day

Dave celebrates Penguin Awareness Day

The origin of Penguin Awareness Day (January 20th) is shrouded in mystery.  Nobody seems to know when it came about or who thought of it, but I, personally, have been celebrating since 2016, so we at least know it’s been around that long.  People always ask me why we even need a Penguin Awareness Day, since they’re not exactly an obscure species or anything – just look at all the documentaries, animated movies, and loads and loads of penguin toys that exist in my apartment, much less throughout the world.  So what’s the point of having an "Awareness Day"?

Firstly, there’s so much to know!  Penguins are more than just an adorable flightless bird that waddles around Antarctica.  Did you know that there are 18 recognized species of penguins?  Did you know there are wild penguins in Africa, Australia, even the Galapagos Islands?  Did you know that some penguins nest in burrows, while others live in the jungle?  Did you know there’s a penguin at the Edinburgh Zoo who has been knighted? (Brigadier Sir Nils Olav!)

Did you know that 10 of the 17 penguin species are listed as threatened?   Global warming and commercial fishing practices have a negative impact on their habitat and food supply. Invasive species, both plants and animals, destroy penguin nesting sites. Penguin colonies are threatened by pollution, industrial development, and oil spills.

How can we help penguins?  Take steps to care for the earth, including reducing waste and recycling.  Donate to reputable organizations dedicated to penguin research and conservation.  And spread the word, today and everyday.  Be aware of penguins so they can continue to waddle for generations.
